IP CCTV Installation Costs Fall, Kick-Starting IP Revolution

IPCCTVInstallation

IP CCTV installation has been achievable for over a decade, but it is only recently that the market has really started to take off. Advances in Wireless Point to Point and Multipoint solutions mean that wireless connections are also now far more cost-effective and flexible, for connecting both analogue and IP CCTV cameras. A real IP CCTV revolution is underway!

What is driving the change first and foremost, is that IP CCTV installation costs have been rapidly decreasing and the HD resolutions of IP cameras are providing greater coverage and greater detail. A typical analogue camera equates to about 0.4 MP (megapixels). A standard IP CCTV camera offers 2 MP, more than five times the analogue resolution. With some cameras offering up to 10MP, it is only a matter of time before IP CCTV installations are the norm.

IP CCTV cameras offer remote access and analytics

Improvements in CCTV hardware have come hand in hand with advancements in analytics software. These new Video Management Systems (VMS) allow users to quickly analyse hours of recorded footage. They can also be combined with other software to allow applications such as Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR), facial recognition and motion detection. Users can also login remotely via a web-based interface and monitor real-time footage on desktops, smartphones or tablets.

Flexible powering and no extra cabling

Cables utilised by an existing analogue system can be used to connect new IP CCTV cameras to the Network Video Recorder (NVR). Alternatively, Ethernet cables, which also allow for Power over Ethernet (PoE) can be used. Where re-wiring would be too costly or cause damage to sensitive sites such as historic or listed buildings, a device that can allow data and PoE over existing cabling can be deployed. If the IP CCTV camera is replacing an analogue camera, the existing power source can be reused.

High-end NVRs can also allow existing analogue cameras to be incorporated into a new IP CCTV installation, reducing the initial installation costs and allowing a phased completion of a much larger IP CCTV System. Footage can be reviewed with multiple zooms on playback, even on fixed lens cameras, with no degradation of the image. This eliminates a common problem with analogue systems, where high levels of compression can render images unreadable.

Sending data over wireless networks with IP CCTV Installation

Conventional analogue solutions use expensive fibre to connect cameras to the control centre. Even without an unbroken line-of-sight between the camera and the server’s location, cabling costs can be massively reduced by transmitting data wirelessly. For businesses wanting to connect sites in reasonably close proximity, Wireless Point to Point can offer the highest performance and lowest cost solution.
